PFVFR History

The Providence Forge Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1951, with the support of the Ruritan Club and the American Legion Post 178. The mission of the department was to provide local fire protection for New Kent and parts of Charles City Counties. The Department purchased its first fire truck in 1952, with donations and funds raised by sponsoring a local carnival. The first fire house in the county was built a year later and is still used by the Department today, to house fire apparatus.

In the early 1990’s the name of the organization was changed from Providence Forge Volunteer Fire Department to Providence Forge Volunteer Fire and Rescue to encompass the new ambulance and rescue service that was being provided by the organization. In 2002, the Department moved to its current location along Highway 155 in the center of the County. Although the Department has grown to meet the needs of New Kent and the surrounding area, it still maintains the friendly, small town attitude that is part of its roots.
